Italian Barbera Winexpert Limited Edition Wine Making Kit
Piedmont is the most outstanding and distinctive wine region in Italy. Situated in the northwest corner of the country, next to Switzerland and France, distinctive chalky soils show the best growing areas on the hillsides running down from the Alps (‘Piedmont’ means ‘foot of the mountain’) where the climate produces enough summer heat to ripen one of Italy’s most delightful grapes, Barbera. Native to Piedmont the Barbera vine is it was documented as early as the 13th century. However, it was likely growing there much earlier. Italy's second most widely planted red variety, it accounts for thirteen of the country’s 200 appellations.
Barbera thrives in hot climates, producing generously. However, Barbera achieves higher quality in cooler climates, such as the Piedmont, with its chalk and manganese soils. Cooler conditions bring long ripening periods and rich, ripe fruit. Relatively gentle tannins balance a backbone of acidity, slightly offset by rustic notes. Drinkable when released, good vintages from superior microclimates age with considerable grace. Known for its higher acidity and lower tannins, Barbera is a very approachable wine. The LE15 Barbera is medium bodied with a sour cherry nose and a bit of earthiness. Bright, red fruit flavors of cherry and cranberry, with a hint of spice, tie it all together. Fresh acidity and smooth silky tannins make this a wine that can easily be enjoyed with or without food. Sweetness: Dry Body: Medium Alcohol: 13.5%*
